Edinburgh Airport Speeds Up Security Flow Edinburgh Airport (Vinci Airports directive) Category: Commercial — Contractor: Balfour Beatty — Year of completion: April 2025 Project Value: £350,000 Home / Projects / Commercial / Edinburgh Airport Speeds Up Security Flow As part of a £24 million UK-wide directive upgrade, Edinburgh Airport successfully expanded its security capacity from six to eight lanes, installing advanced X-Ray scanners while remaining fully operational. Balfour Beatty led the expansion, supported by WorkSpace Design’s bespoke fit-out and design expertise. Edinburgh Airport’s upgrade introduced new scanning technology, allowing passengers to keep liquids and large electronics in their bags—making the process quicker while reducing the reliance on single-use plastic bags. WorkSpace Design supplied all new security lane benches and bespoke joinery to accommodate the installation of eight new scanners. This included associated control desks, security desks, and liquid disposal units, all essential for integrating the scanners. The replacement of fitted furniture across seven original lanes and two new lanes was carefully phased over five stages to ensure passenger flow continued uninterrupted during the works. This project not only increased security capacity but also aligned with Edinburgh Airport’s sustainability ambitions and laid the groundwork for future expansion.
