Andy’s First Day It Matters How You Treat Your Staff March 30, 2017 Home / News / Blog / Andy’s First Day Andy was very nervous on his first day of work, even more so than at his interview. The new job was a break that he had been looking for and it was a bit daunting. Andy was tense with anticipation as he approached the building. He took a deep breath as he pushed the door open. The smiling receptionist waved him to a seat and asked him if he’d like a coffee. She appeared very warm and welcoming. Various staff came in, smiled and introduced themselves. Andy enjoyed a chat with his manager who quickly put him at ease and assured him that his expertise would be a great asset to the company. Andy knew that he had much to offer, but he wanted to make sure that the company culture and ethos is exactly what he was looking for. Jo, the H&S lady came by and took him for a complete induction, explaining the layout of the building, and everything from free lunches, to fire alarms and photocopiers. Jo was very helpful in answering Andy’s questions and this put Andy’s mind at ease. Andy’s line manager and general manager took him on a tour of the building and discussed the history of the business and how it operates. It was evident that the company has operational goals and values that have to be adhered to. Andy was quite pleased to notice that the company has absolute belief in the power of teamwork. Management seemed to listen and effectively communicate with the team, which allowed each team member to own their role. After the tour, Andy was shown to his desk where he found a welcome pack. This contained a new laptop, stationary, PPE, an introductory brochure, team photos, useful information like lunchtime walks, shops, petrol stations etc and lastly a welcome card signed by the whole team. Andy was eager to start work as soon as possible. Andy met his mentor, Ryan who showed him how the processes and systems work. He was encouraged to ask as many questions as possible. As the weeks progressed, the daily catch up then reduced to a weekly catch up and he felt comfortable to be a professional in the field. Andy was fully proficient and so well trained that he could train the next new member of the team! He was then able to take on more responsibility, which allowed for more professional growth.
